Filterbrew hysteria: hope or hype? Exploring the controversial topic of coffee brew preferences.

Today a new sensation is sweeping through the cafes of the world- filter brew. But does filter coffee live up to the hype?

If you can choose a fresh espresso, or cafe lungo or americano, it is superior for experiencing the coffee bean in it’s optimal expression.

Who would filter coffee bean good for? Church functions, office parties, etc. and for nostalgic purposes.

If you want to experience a coffee in the most ideal way, it espresso, because fresh steam extracted coffee aka espresso is a fresh extract in the most true sense of the word: fresh. Fresh crushed, fresh brewed. The older the bean, the more stale. The more time the voletile oils are allowed to sit in the hot water after brewing, the more denatured they will be. As filter coffee is dripping through a paper filter- right there the filter adds or rather reduces the flavor of the coffee- so not ideal for the coffee purist. While there may be cold extraction and glass distilation methods which some prefer- the paper filter automatically produces an inferior coffee due to the paper, and because the beans used in filter drip and espresso and derived beverages- uses the premium most ripe heavy red coffee beans on the plantation. Here again the filter coffee aka drip coffee is the suboptimal choice. Therefore logically in most cases in a decision between filter and espresso coffee- always espresso based for the best taste. Naturally it is possible for preference to vary, and for individual reasons anyone may contest my assertion that espresso is best as it captures the purest freshest flavor of the best beans.

One has not smelled the fragrance…

“One’s nostrils are no better than the bellows of a blacksmith if one has not smelled the fragrance of Kṛṣṇa’s body, which is like the aroma of musk combined with that of the bluish lotus flower. Indeed, such combinations are actually defeated by the aroma of Kṛṣṇa’s body.“ Caitanya Caritamrta Madhya 2.33 Translation by Srila Prabhupada

Arms of Anantadeva smeared with Agarwood.

Text 1: Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said to Mahārāja Parīkṣit: My dear King, approximately 240,000 miles beneath the planet Pātāla lives another incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He is the expansion of Lord Viṣṇu known as Lord Ananta or Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa. He is always in the transcendental position, but because He is worshiped by Lord Śiva, the deity of tamo-guṇa or darkness, He is sometimes called tāmasī. Lord Ananta is the predominating Deity of the material mode of ignorance as well as the false ego of all conditioned souls. When a conditioned living being thinks, “I am the enjoyer, and this world is meant to be enjoyed by me,” this conception of life is dictated to him by Saṅkarṣaṇa. Thus the mundane conditioned soul thinks himself the Supreme Lord.Text 2: Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: This great universe, situated on one of Lord Anantadeva’s thousands of hoods, appears just like a white mustard seed. It is infinitesimal compared to the hood of Lord Ananta.Text 3: At the time of devastation, when Lord Anantadeva desires to destroy the entire creation, He becomes slightly angry. Then from between His two eyebrows appears three-eyed Rudra, carrying a trident. This Rudra, who is known as Sāṅkarṣaṇa, is the embodiment of the eleven Rudras, or incarnations of Lord Śiva. He appears in order to devastate the entire creation.Text 4: The pink, transparent toenails on the Lord’s lotus feet are exactly like valuable gems polished to a mirror finish. When the unalloyed devotees and the leaders of the snakes offer their obeisances to Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa with great devotion, they become very joyful upon seeing their own beautiful faces reflected in His toenails. Their cheeks are decorated with glittering earrings, and the beauty of their faces is extremely pleasing to see.Text 5: Lord Ananta’s arms are attractively long, beautifully decorated with bangles and completely spiritual. They are white, and so they appear like silver columns. When the beautiful princesses of the serpent kings, hoping for the Lord’s auspicious blessing, smear His arms with aguru pulp, sandalwood pulp and kuṅkuma, the touch of His limbs awakens lusty desires within them. Understanding their minds, the Lord looks at the princesses with a merciful smile, and they become bashful, realizing that He knows their desires. Then they smile beautifully and look upon the Lord’s lotus face, which is beautified by reddish eyes rolling slightly from intoxication and delighted by love for His devotees.Text 6: Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa is the ocean of unlimited spiritual qualities, and thus He is known as Anantadeva. He is nondifferent from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. For the welfare of all living entities within this material world, He resides in His abode, restraining His anger and intolerance.

Srimad Bhagavatam 5.25.1-7 Translation by His Divine Grace A.C Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada

The scent of Lord Sri Krishna’s transcendental body.

Translation

“ ‘The scent of Kṛṣṇa’s transcendental body surpasses the aroma of musk and attracts the minds of all women. The eight lotuslike parts of His body distribute the fragrance of lotuses mixed with that of camphor. His body is anointed with aromatic substances like musk, camphor, sandalwood and aguru. O My dear friend, that Personality of Godhead, also known as the enchanter of Cupid, always increases the desire of My nostrils.’

Sri Krishna’s Aguru scented hand. (Agarwood)

O Uddhava! It is indeed regrettable that Kṛṣṇa resides in Mathurā. Does He remember His father’s household affairs and His friends, the cowherd boys? O great soul! Does He ever talk about us, His maidservants? When will He lay on our heads His aguru-scented hand?

Srimad Bhagavatam 10.47.21 Translation by Swami Ji Srila Prabhupada

Raksasi Putana’s body smelled like Aguru due to Krishna’s sucking her breasts.

Translation

Because of Kṛṣṇa’s having sucked the breast of the Rākṣasī Pūtanā, when Kṛṣṇa killed her she was immediately freed of all material contamination. Her sinful reactions automatically vanished, and therefore when her gigantic body was being burnt, the smoke emanating from her body was fragrant like aguru incense.
